Green Building Practices in Oman: Factors Effecting Material Utilization

Across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, rapid construction growth has driven unprecedented energy use and CO₂ emissions. Despite booming infrastructure and development, sustainability and green construction practices have not yet become a core focus in most GCC nations — particularly Oman, where opportunity meets responsibility

“The GCC’s growth story is impressive — but true progress lies in building not just faster, but smarter, cleaner, and more sustainably.”

Sustainability in GCC Construction: A Missed Opportunity?

Many GCC countries have seen tremendous expansion in their construction sectors over the past decade, driving up per capita energy consumption and carbon emissions. Yet, environmental responsibility remains underemphasised in regional construction practices.

For Oman, however, this slower development pace presents a unique advantage — the opportunity to embed sustainability at the foundation of future growth. With numerous upcoming projects, now is the ideal time to introduce green principles into design, material selection, and policy frameworks before the industry fully matures.

Despite these opportunities, several challenges hinder the adoption of sustainable materials and green construction in Oman and the wider GCC region.

High upfront costs remain one of the biggest barriers to adopting sustainable construction. Expenses related to procuring eco-friendly materials, skilled labour, and maintaining design consistency discourage many developers and stakeholders from choosing green options
